David Strother plays NS Design electric violins

This trio - DBC:Unit - from Los Angeles features David Strother on electric violin, Breeze Smith on drums and percussion, and Carl Royce on double bass. All three musicians are dedicated creatives; violinist Strother is a composer/sound sculptor. Smith is a designer, instrument builder, visual artist, and sound sculptor. Royce also composes and is a visual artist.

Drawing from the jazz vernacular, the trio shows its true colors in playful experimentation and spontaneous interchange. The album unfolds stealthily; Strother's violin scatters textured, distant notes over the double bass' spiky deep ostinato. Drummer Smith's fragmented rhythms hover and swarm. Quiet spaces give way to wavering tones, weaving a subtle tension into the tapestry of elastic middle-eastern melodies and colorful percussive deviations.
